The Dakshayani Velayudhan Award is an annual award given to Dakshinayani Veludhan, the first and only Dalit woman in the Constituent Assembly.
Established in 2019, the award is presented to women who contribute to empowering other women in Kerala state.
During the Kerala Budget 2019 presentation at Kerala Legislative Assembly on January 31, 2019, Kerala Finance Minister Dr. Dakshinayan Velayudhan Award was announced by Thomas Issac. Rs 2 crore was put into the budget for this price.
Health Minister KK Shailaja said on Monday that the award will be presented to a woman who is committed to empowering other needy women and those who are marginalized.
She said administrative approval was given to grant the honor, which bears a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh, a quote and a sculpture, adding that it will be presented on International Women’s Day this year.
Applicants must be field workers for at least the past five years and work in a manner conducive to the empowerment and marginalization of women.
She said the winner would be selected by a screening committee, headed by a government-level gender adviser.
